Originally the Washington County Courthouse, the long neglected, castle-like building was given by the state of Rhode Island to a West Kingston arts group in 1989. The group soon became the South County Center for the Arts and renovated the 1896 stone building's leaky roofs, crumbling walls and broken windows. Upon completion, the group quickly set about providing a home for the local arts community.
Today, center on Kingstown Road is home to a number of educational and artistic programs. The building itself features renovated galleries and offices and a courtroom turned showroom. The former courtroom, with its polished hardwood floor and majestic windows, seats about 125 guests and is the setting for all of the Courthouse Theater Company's productions. The center is fully handicap accessible.
