For Immediate Release
Kingston, R.I. – The Courthouse Theater Co. is proud to announce its fourth summer season at its new home at the Kingston Free Library. This season stars a local cast in three light-hearted productions.
The season opens July 11 with Melancholy Play, a breezy farce by the acclaimed young dramatist Sarah Ruhl. This enchanting drama tells the story of Tilly, a young bank teller who charms all comers with her soulful sadness. But when, one day, she suddenly finds herself to be happy, the residents of Tilly’s small Illinois town react in a surprising and hilarious way. Audiences will love what Variety called the “lighthearted absurdist touch,” of Melancholy Play, that “ranges from clever to ridiculous to wicked.” Local actors, including Victoria Gillette, Meghan Rose Donnelly, and Matt Royality-Lindman star. Show dates are July 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and July 13 at 2 p.m.
“Melancholy Play is a great way to start the summer because it exemplifies what we love most about this season,” company veteran Michael Boyce said. “All three of our productions this year are on the leading edge of American drama. And Melancholy Play really proves that contemporary theater doesn’t have to be stuffy or unapproachable – so much of it is welcoming and laugh-out-loud funny.”
The season continues with a Playwrights’ Festival featuring a series of playful one-act shows by local talent, including Davidb Marchetti of South Kingstown. Inspired by the originality and fun of the company’s sell-out 24-Hour Play festivals, this event will feature local favorites Spencer Curry, Corey Sickenger, Emily Greenhalgh and many more. Show dates are July 25 and 26 at 7 p.m.
In August, the company will wrap up its season with Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, made famous by the Chicago-based company, The Neo-Futurists. This unique show changes every night, with audience members playing a role by choosing the order of 30 short plays presented in just 60 minutes. Sure to bring huge laughs and edge-of-your-seat excitement, you’ll want to see more than one performance of this exceptional theatrical event. Show dates are Aug. 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. with additional 10 p.m. shows on Aug. 8 and 15.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students for Melancholy Play and Too Much Light. All tickets for the Playwrights’ Festival are $10. The Kingston Free Library is located 2605 Kingstown Road (Route 138) at the main entrance to the University of Rhode Island. The building is air-conditioned and handicap accessible.
